About
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy thousands still remain in need of mutual aid offered by Occupy Sandy. In the absence of proper city or state support this crisis-wayfinding project installs temporary signs to help all residents know about relief centers.
We are an ad hoc collective of collectives working in iterative and agile ways, contributing visual environmental design in mutual aid to the wider Occupy Sandy network. This project started on November 5th and its pilot beta installation is focused around the YANA/Occupy Sandy hub in Rockaway. Other Occupy Sandy hub areas to follow incorporating input from on the ground experiences. Once this wayfinding system is updated with enough input we will release Open Source design templates for free Public Domain use.
This website is being used for two reasons: to crowdsource local input on best places to install signs, and to track the installation of signs for easy ongoing maintenance of the signs as long as they are needed.
- Occupy Sandy coordinator
"A huge problem that is not being addressed at all is that information about where to get help is not reaching the residents. So many people don't even know about relief centers that are just a few blocks away from them, and are traveling great distances on foot to reach help. Or worse, not going out because it is too far to travel on foot. Some are not even aware that there are buses running. Without television, internet, and cell service, the information is just not reaching the people in dire need. The mayor's office is posting information for residents on their website and on twitter--I guess they didn't get the memo that there's still no power."

Why this project exists:
"What we need to do is let people know that hey, 10 blocks away there's hot food, blankets, flashlights, water and medical services"- Occupy Sandy coordinator
